The 22% supplemental rate

  • The IRS treats bonuses as supplemental wages. Employers must withhold at a flat 22% federal rate (37% for bonuses over $1M in a year).
  • This is withholding, not your final tax. If your effective rate is lower than 22%, you'll get some back at tax time. If higher, you'll owe more.
  • Your actual tax depends on total annual income, deductions, and filing status.

Social Security cap

  • SS (6.2%) only applies to wages up to $176,100 in 2025. Once your total wages hit that limit, SS withholding stops.
  • If your annual salary already exceeds $176,100, no SS is withheld from your bonus. Enter your salary above to account for this.
  • Medicare (1.45%) has no cap — it applies to your full bonus.
